Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Health Services, Adult Operating Room, the incumbent is responsible for:
- Slating Emergency OR procedures via the Surgical Information Management System (SIMS) in OR Scheduler and also utilizing multiple applications for managing slating functions including and not limited to Ventis, EPR and PART.
- Communicating with the Charge Nurse, In-House Anesthetist (IHA), Surgeon and Patient Location and Admitting (when required) the potential time and date of the surgical procedures and any and all updates to cases.
- Liaising with Medical Devices Reprocessing Department (MDR) the need to provide for case carts for surgical procedures.
- Providing reception functions for the front desk including the walk-up window and desk.
- Ordering and dispensing blood and blood products during shifts and keeping track of Transfusion 25 details.
Experience
- Two years previous experience as a Unit Clerk, preferably on a surgical or special care unit.
- Previous experience slating procedures via a computerized system.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Complete high school education, Manitoba standards.
- Successful completion of a recognized Unit Clerk training program required.
- Medical terminology (pass mark 75%).
Qualifications and Skills
- Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
- Typing/keyboard skills 30 wpm.
- Demonstrated proficiency in a Windows based environment.
- Knowledge of International Classification of Disease 10th preferred.
- Must have good communication skills with diverse groups with competing interests and demonstrate flexibility in dealing with constant change.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work effectively under considerable stress and maintain accurate performance for a very busy unit covering 13 Operating rooms on the Adult OR floor, two minor procedure rooms in an adjacent building, a Trauma OR in the emergency department and two theatres in the Kleyson Institute of Advanced Medicine (KIAM).
- Must be able to cover Days, Evenings and Nights weekdays and weekends in a Master Rotation.
- The individual is the access point to slating procedures in the Adult/Children’s Operating Room and must always be on site and available to respond to a critical need.
- The Adult OR is the only site in the region requiring 24 hour a day, 7 day a week coverage for receiving emergency bookings, adding cases to the system and providing for care in the Operating Room.
