Job Summary:
Our experienced team is committed to providing a comprehensive radiation protection services and possesses the mandate of a regulatory role in the Province. We deliver a wide range of radiation protection services encompassing ionizing and non-ionizing areas including radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, radionuclide areas, industry and research and development activities and also present teaching and training programs.
Reporting to the Head of Radiation Protection and Imaging Physics Medical Physics Department, the Senior Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) will contribute to the Health Physics support that CCMB provides to MB Health. The RPO will work with radioactive materials across healthcare and industry providing radiation safety and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) compliance support. The RPO will work with ionizing radiation detection equipment and is expected to be familiar with contamination monitors and occupational and patient dosimeters.
The Senior RPO will also contribute to the work of the X-ray compliance team. The Senior RPO will register, inspect, and assess X-ray equipment operating in healthcare, education and industry within the Province of Manitoba. This position contributes to the X-ray compliance team maintaining the Manitoba Radiation Protection Act. The incumbent will follow established radiation safety and PHIA procedures and participate in emergency preparedness and response activities. This position requires a degree of flexibility in the scheduling of work hours and will require the incumbent to work non-conforming shift patterns.
Qualifications:
Education
- Post Secondary Diploma/Certificate in Radiological Technology (Radiography, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine) or University Degree in Physics or related discipline from an accredited educational institution.
Experience
- 3 years of practical experience in in radiation protection, exercising radiation protection principles, handling radioactive materials (sealed and unsealed sources), and working with diagnostic X-rays including experience in a General Duty Radiation Protection Officer role.
- 3 years comprehensive expertise in X-ray quality assurance.
- 3 years experience with radiation protection and safety procedures.
- Experience with leadership skills and teaching as evidenced by their experience as a General Duty Radiation Protection Officer.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- Familiar with CCMB protocols for handling radioactive materials.
- Having completed continuing education courses, particularly those aligned with radon, radiation protection and practices in this field, will be considered an asset
- Experience in radiation protection and demonstrate regulatory capabilities to ensure compliance with provincial and federal legislation related to ionizing radiation.
- Experience with sampling sealed radioactive sources and analyzing samples using a NaI well detector.
- Familiarity with a range of radiation detection instruments, including dose rate meters, electronic personal dosimeters, and contamination monitors.
- Experience performing pre-calibration checks and participating in the calibration process of radiation detection equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with a broad spectrum of X-ray and industrial X-ray systems in Manitoba.
- Must have proven track record of conducting high-precision quality and dose measurements on diverse X-ray equipment utilizing radiation measurement systems.
- Ability to calculate shielding requirements for medical X-ray imaging facilities using applicable methodology.
- Ability to deliver professional presentations, papers, or educational sessions at conferences other relevant venues. Additionally, must demonstrate the ability to provide teaching, training, supervision, and mentorship to other staff and students.
- Skills and experience with technical writing and documentation/data management.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, customer service, and problem-solving skills for dealing with technical staff and the general public. Must be able to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Proficient with MS Word/Excel/Outlook and internet use.
- Excellent English comprehension with both written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physical activities, such as lifting equipment, and pushing/pulling carts with equipment.
- Must have or be eligible to obtain a valid Manitoba driver’s license. Must be available (and provide own vehicle) for travelling to locations throughout Manitoba.
- Ability to travel to other facilities up to 30% of the time.

- Experience working or volunteering in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to speak French.
