Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Health Services and/or delegate, the incumbent will be involved in direct patient care and will act as a resource to patients and families as required at the Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department waiting room. General areas of service include: direct patient care, emotional support, advocacy, community relations and public relations. Acts as a communication link between the Adult Emergency Department, the patient and appropriate community services.
Experience
- Previous experience working in a community or hospital-based setting, providing physical, emotional and social support to the patient.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Minimum grade 10 education, Manitoba standards, required.
- Successful completion of a recognized Heath Care Aide Course required.
- Must successfully complete the CPR for Health Care Providers course within three months of employment.
- Must successfully complete the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Program (in-house) within three months of employment.
- Advocacy and interview skill training will be provided within the probation period.
- First Aid training preferred.

Qualifications and Skills
- Information and/or training will be provided within the probation period for the following:
- Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHIMIS) and Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions).
- Regional, site and unit policies and procedures.
- Roles and responsibilities of members of the health care team.
- Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
- Knowledge of the Emergency Program and objectives of the Health Sciences Centre preferred.
- Knowledge of community development and advocacy principles preferred.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills required.
- General skills and ability to perform all tasks and responsibilities relevant to the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assigned workload.
- Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
- Ability to perform as a team member and seek assistance as necessary.
Physical Requirements
- Some heavy lifting required.
- Required to work in an unpredictable environment where patients with alcohol/chemical abuse and aggressive social behaviors may occur. Required to handle body fluids.
