Position Overview

Performs direct and indirect client care and non-client care activities that are delegated and supervised by the Audiologist responsible for the care of clients.

 

The Audiology Assistant will participate as a member of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening team and be responsible for administering hearing screening tests to newborns as directed by the Audiologist. The Audiology Assistant will also be responsible for the day administration functions required by the Audiology department. The incumbent will exercise the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters.

 

The Audiology Assistant functions under the Vision, Mission and Strategic Priorities of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority while following the established evidence-based practices, protocols and required education developed for the Manitoba Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with infants/children in a health care setting.
  • Minimum of three years direct related experience would be an asset.
  • Experience working with communication disorders and deaf and hard of hearing people would be an asset.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba Standards, required.
  • Completion of an approved Rehabilitation Assistant Program.
  • Completion of Audiology Assistant Program or willingness and ability to enroll in such a course through distance education and completion within one year.

 

SPECIAL TRAINING:

  • Basic computer skills and Medical Terminology required.
  • Successful completion of the in-house training provided by supervising Audiologist in accordance with training standards.
  • Successful completion of refresher training as per established protocol.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Valid driver’s license and access to/use of a vehicle.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong English oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Accurate word processing at 40 words per minute; computer skills including Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel), etc.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to travel to provide infant screening at hospitals and community locations in Winnipeg.
  • May be required to work extended hours.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, radiation, toxic materials, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/visitors/staff.

 

 

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
