Position Overview

Directly accountable to the Manager of Recreation, the Recreation Facilitator provides resident centered opportunities for participation in recreation and leisure activities, in order to meet the residents’ physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual needs. The Recreation Facilitator in conjunction with the resident and family sets individualized goals for the resident, helping them find meaning through leisure and recreation activities by promoting optimism, health and personal growth, and independence in leisure, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

The recreation facilitator conducts initial and ongoing assessments, develops intervention plans, documents changes in clients’ progress and evaluates results to determine if the clients’ goals and objectives were achieved. The recreation facilitator uses their knowledge of current trends, research, and practices in recreation and leisure services to develop appropriate and meaningful programs for residents with diverse needs and abilities. Performs all duties in accordance with established Health and Safety regulations/guidelines, and policies and procedures.

Experience

  • Two years recent experience working with residents in both small and large groups in a geriatric or related health care setting.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Graduate of Recreation Facilitator Course for Older Adults or equivalent.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Food Handler’s certificate.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to work co-operatively as a member of the care team.
  • Assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills.
  • Computer literacy as appropriate to the setting.
  • Ability to work with individuals with mental and physical impairments.
  • Comfortable discussing issues related to spirituality and EOL spiritual care needs.
  • Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, creativity, sound judgement, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for transporting and escorting residents to and from programs both within the home and outside the home.
  • Ability to assist and train volunteers who are involved with recreation services.

Physical Requirements

  • May be exposed to disease, toxic materials, allergens, noise, body fluids, feces, etc.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated individuals.
  • May be required to work extended hours.

 

 

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
