Position Overview

Families First is a community-based resource designed to promote healthy growth and development of children by supporting families in their homes during pregnancy and the first five years of a child’s life, for a period of up to three years.

Under the guidance of the Families First - Public Health Nurse, and directly reporting to the Manager Health Services, the Home Visitor 1 acts as a member of an inter- disciplinary team and is responsible to initiate and maintain regular connection through family centered home based visiting. The incumbent will utilize an evidence informed curriculum, and share activities that support positive parent-child relationships and enhance child health and development as well as build on existing strengths by optimizing the family’s use of community resources. In consultation with Public Health Nurses, the Home Visitor 1 has a responsibility to support families to explore goals related to their values.

The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values; and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with families with young children.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Grade twelve (12) education or equivalent.

  • Working knowledge of parent-child attachment and early childhood development.
  • Knowledge of and ability to link to community resources that support families, parenting, and optimal childhood growth and development.

  • Proficiency of both official languages is essential for target and designated bilingual positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums.
  • Good work and attendance record.
  • Requires a valid Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.00.

Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
  • May be required to work in an environment that promotes and is conducive to pets and plants.
  • May work occasionally evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Will be required to travel to other regional facilities as the position duties may require.
