Summer Urban Farm Assistant

Full-Time, Summer Term Position

 

NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for an Urban Farm Assistant for the NorWest Community Food Centre. The NorWest Community Food Centre offers meal, gardening and advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity and builds community.

 

The Urban Farm Assistant will be responsible for supporting and delivering gardening programs and supporting the Community Food Centre’s summer activities.  The assistant will report directly to our Farm Inclusion Programmer and work alongside community member volunteers to weed, plant, and water the Urban Farm and Garden.  Other tasks may include supporting activities in Gilbert Park, organizing workshops, community outreach and promotion, and additional garden, yard and building maintenance as required.

 

We are seeking candidates who enjoy working on multiple activities and goals, are well-organized, enjoy working with all ages and are passionate about food security and food justice issues.

 

*Note: Applicants must be students aged 15-29 years old.

 

Qualifications

  • Experience in gardening (through paid employment or volunteer work) is not required but is an asset.
  • Ability to work outdoors, engage in physical labour in hot or rainy weather
  • Interest in learning about gardening and growing food
  • Experience working with youth, volunteers and community members
  • Able to work weekends and evenings as required

 

Duties

  • Provide support to other Community Food Centre programs and special events
  • Garden, yard and facility maintenance including weeding, watering, mowing, garbage removal and cleaning as needed
  • Develop, deliver and promote garden and farm based educational programs for a variety of audiences.
  • Supporting local Fruit and Vegetable Markets.
  • Other duties as required

 

Length of Contract: June 4 – August 26, 2026 (12 weeks)
Wage and Hours
: $16.00 per hour, 35 hours a week
