COMMUNITY FOOD CENTRE ASSISTANT
Paid Term Position-35 hours/week for 8 weeks

Responsible To: Director of Community Food Centre
Length of Contract: June 30 – August 22, 2025 (8 weeks)
Salary: $15.80/hour
NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for Community Food Centre Assistants for the NorWest Community Food Centre. The NorWest Community Food Centre offers meal, gardening and advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity and builds community.
Community Food Centre Assistant will be responsible for supporting and delivering meal programs and supporting the Community Food Centre’s summer activities. The assistant will report directly to our Chefs and work alongside community member volunteers to prepare meals, chop fruits and veggies, wash dishes, maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, assist with our Fruit and Veggie Market, and help with gardening. Other tasks may include supporting activities in Gilbert Park, organizing workshops, community outreach and promotion, and additional kitchen maintenance as required.
We are seeking candidates who enjoy working on multiple activities and goals, are well-organized, enjoy working with all ages and are passionate about food security and food justice issues.
*Note: Applicants must be students aged 15-29 years old.
Qualifications
- Experience with program development, group facilitation, community outreach
- Experience in kitchens (through paid employment or volunteer work)
- Ability to work in fast paced environments
- Leadership experience working with youth, volunteers and community members
- Demonstrated ability to work with children and youth
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
- Able to work weekends and evenings as required
- Experience in food handling and preparation
Duties
- Develop, deliver and promote kitchen and garden based educational programs for a variety of audiences.
- Provide support to other Community Food Centre programs and special events
- Prepare, plate and serve meals, wash dishes, wipe down tables, sweep and mop.
- Support the Urban Farm and Garden program by weeding, planting, watering, and harvesting.
- Other duties as required
