Safety Officer 2025-036-SB

The Safety Officer will support, advise and educate Actionmarguerite management and staff on matters related to workplace safety and accident prevention.  The position has the responsibility to actively engage with all Actionmarguerite sites to achieve and maintain Safe Work Certification status.  The Safety Officer will develop and/or revise, monitor and implement the organization’s health and safety policies and standards; ensure Actionmarguerite is compliant with health and safety legislation; and work with all management and staff to reduce and prevent hazards, dangers and accidents. The person in this role has a keen understanding of our operational environment and uses this knowledge to ensure we have the right systems and processes in place for the health and safety of staff, visitors and volunteers but also of the workplace and the environment.  The Safety Officer works to communicate and transfer this knowledge to all staff. The Safety Officer reports to the Training, Development and Safety Manager.  This person will work closely with the leadership team and engage routinely and directly with staff members in all units and departments.  The incumbent will provide services to all Actionmarguerite sites and applicable contracts. Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures).  Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

Starting Date: As soon as possible
Shift and Hours of Work: 1.0 FTE - full-time - hours of work currently 08:30 - 16:45
Pay Scale: As per established salary scale
Specifications: This position provides services to our multiple sites. Travel between sites will be required. Assignment and hours of work are subject to change at any time as per operational requirements.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional obtained within 2 years.
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate.
  • Class 5 Driver License

Experience

  • 2-3 years prior related experience working in the occupational safety and health field, including direct experience in a health care setting;
  • Demonstrated proficiency working in a computerized and HR environment and with Human Resources Information Systems (knowledge of Quadrant Workforce is an asset);
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a Windows environment and with MS Office software; and
  • Experience working with collective agreements.

Abilities and Skills

  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) in both official languages (French and English) is required. If you are not French speaking, a commitment to begin to learn French and take courses is required;
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders (i.e. Manitoba Association for Safety in Health Care MASH);
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and respond to competing priorities with initiative and organizational skill;
  • Ability to retain information on a strictly confidential basis;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement;
  • Ability to establish work priorities and schedule time appropriately;
  • Ability to lead/facilitate working groups, conduct training and presentations;
  • Research skills;
  • Ability to develop procedures/policies and educational programs that meet the needs of the workplace and align with organizational objectives;
  • Ability and willingness to respond to after-hours emergencies as well as to vary work hours on occasion as required in order to respond to the needs of the 24 hour operational units;
  • Ability to demonstrate a satisfactory employment record, including attendance; and
  • Current Criminal Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector and Adult Abuse Registry Check deemed satisfactory by the Employer.

Knowledge

Demonstrates knowledge and support of:

  • Applicable rules, acts and regulations and understands the importance of accuracy, security and statutory responsibilities in performing tasks;
  • Applicable Collective Agreements and Employment Standards;
  • Actionmarguerite’s Vision, Mission and Values and Resident Bill of Right, policies and procedures;
  • Proficiency in administering safety and health legislation, standards and accepted guidelines.
  • Ability to objectively assess worksite risks;
  • Knowledge of environmental testing and monitoring equipment and procedures (eg. CO, Noise);
  • Ability to objectively investigate incidents, take witness statements, analyze information, develop conclusions and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrence;
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions during an emergency including a serious incident and or fatality;
  • W.H.M.I.S. program.
This position is designated bilingual. All staff are hired for the facility. Employees may hold more than one position in different Actionmarguerite facilities, where the sum total of hours does not exceed 1.0 full-time equivalence.
