Job Summary:
General supervision is provided by a scientist, postgraduate researcher, or more senior technician. Positions at this level provide skilled technical services or assistance. This includes performance of a wide variety of research tasks, including chart reviews.
Incumbents operate and maintain moderately complex equipment or operate specialized equipment in carrying out work related to the research being conducted.
After receiving general instructions on experimental design and objectives, incumbents are expected to organize, plan and schedule their work to obtain the required information or complete the required tasks on time and/or meet specific milestones. Incumbents are required to learn new procedures, adapt regular procedures, assist in specialized routines and research relevant subject material as directed by their supervisor.
Technical training, guidance and orientation of employees at the same or lower levels is a responsibility of this position. This also includes training of undergraduate and graduate students.
Incumbents are expected to perform any duties performed by Research Technician 1s and 2s as required to support the activities of the unit.

Required:
Level of Formal Education & Experience
- Masters degree in a related discipline.
- or -
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related study area, with a minimum of 3 years of directly-related experience.
- or -
- High school completion with job-related options with a minimum of 7 years of directly-related experience.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- Experience with job-related software such as Word, Excel PowerPoint, and statistical/analytical programs.
- Ability to adapt techniques, to plan and carry out experiments and procedures under general direction and to keep within budget and schedule guidelines.
- Ability to master new and difficult techniques through further education or training.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to train staff and students in techniques used in the workplace.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to oversee the work of others.
- Knowledge of WHMIS and hazardous materials, animal/human ethics protocols and regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned, which may include mobility and/or moderate to heavy lifting.
Other
- Some positions require incumbent to possess philosophy compatible with animal-based research.
- Ability to complete relevant courses and/or obtain relevant certifications (e.g., WHIMIS, Animal User Training, human/animal ethics)
- Must have satisfactory employment record
- Must be legally able to work in Canada
Preferred:
- Experience working with group facilitation and organization.
- Ability to speak French
