This is a shared position between SOGH and Concordia Hospital. Travel between sites mid way through shift is required. Successful candidate must have transportation, km's are compensated.
Position Overview
Working within the Urgent Care team, the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse provides mental health expertise in patient assessment, risk assessment including suicide risk assessment, care planning and disposition, intervention and evaluation within the Urgent Care Department, the Mental Health Observation Unit and the Facility. Provides support and mental healthcare to Department Urgent Care patients, families and personal supports for those experiencing emotional stress. Provides mental health nursing consultation services/support to the Urgent Care team and inpatient units (e.g. medicine, surgery, etc.). Acts as a liaison for discharge planning. Functions as a clinical resource for mental health education within the Urgent Care Department and site. Provides patient care within Seven Oaks Hospital and Concordia Hospital based upon the need for patient assessment/consultation by a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years recent acute mental health experience required.
- Previous experience in an Urgent Care/ Emergency Department preferred.
- Demonstrated competence in:
- Psychiatric assessment within a biopsychosocial framework.
- Crisis intervention.
- Therapeutic communication.
- Co-occurring disorders.
- Teaching skills and abilities working with clients and families; and;
- Supporting and educating colleagues in providing mental healthcare.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required.
- BScMH, BScPN or BN preferred.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) required.
- Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.

- Participate and conduct Critical Incident Stress Management Program (CISM).

- Demonstrated basic computer skills and ability to utilize relevant Emergency Department computer systems.
- Knowledge of:
- College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses/Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Psychiatric/Registered Nurses.
- College of Registered Psychiatric/Registered Nurses of Manitoba Code of Ethics for Registered Psychiatric/Registered Nurses.
- Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
- Scope of practice as documented in the Registered Nurses Act (Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act for RPNs in Mental Health).
- Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) for Registered Nurses.
- Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
- Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
- Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
- Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
- Principles of delegation.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.

Physical Requirements
- Required physical and psychological health to perform the duties of the position.
- Access to and use of a reliable motor vehicle during working hours & suitable for all environmental conditions.
- Possession of a valid Manitoba class 5 driver’s license required.
- Will be required to travel between the Seven Oaks and Concordia sites.
