Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

 

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager, Health Services, the incumbent is responsible for: The initial assessment of children, adolescents and their families and independent ongoing treatment of individuals and/or families referred from the pediatric units and Pediatric Emergency Physician, or from the Consult Liaison Service. As an active member of the multidisciplinary Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program, provides ongoing individual and/or family therapy to patients on the consult liaison service. Acts as a consultant in planning, implementing and evaluating the psychiatric treatment plan with the Children's Hospital inpatient nursing staff. Collaborates with Child and Family Services and/or the Child and Adolescent Mental Health System to gather information and plan outcome disposition. Collaborates and provides self-harm consultation to other disciplines (i.e. social work, medicine, nursing) in the Child Health Program. Provides consultation and/or supervision to student nurses. Organizes and leads support groups for patients, families or staff at the request of staff in specialist areas.

Experience

  • Minimum four years recent Child and Adolescent Mental Health nursing experience required.
  • Previous experience in community and/or ambulatory care nursing is preferred.
  • Prior experience in Consultation Liaison Nursing is preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required.
  • BN or BScMH or BScPN or equivalent as recognized by the Centre required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing or Family Therapy is preferred.
  • Ongoing relevant continuing education in the mental health field is required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must be a graduate of an approved School of Nursing and an active practicing member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and/or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM).
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Scope of practice as documented in the Registered Nurses Act (Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act for RPNs in Mental Health).
  • Demonstrated effective assessment, interviewing, and psychotherapeutic and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to function with minimal supervision, establish priorities and problem-solve effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively with other disciplines involved in patient care.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Knowledge of DSM (IV) - TR diagnostic classification and nursing diagnosis.
  • Demonstrated ability to educate in formal and informal settings.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and adult learning theory.
  • Demonstrated competence as group leader and/or facilitator.
  • Knowledge of an integrated conceptual framework for child and adolescent mental health nursing in an expanded role.
  • Research experience would be an asset.
  • Basic computer skills an asset.

Physical Requirements
