Reporting to the Program Manager – Hope & Healing Program, the Patient and Family Educator – Gynecologic Cancer is a registered nurse with specialized knowledge in oncology who provides education, information, support, and referrals to patients and families affected by gynecologic cancer throughout the cancer continuum (suspicion, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care). Empowering patients to make informed decisions is an essential aspect of this role.

The Patient and Family Educator – Gynecologic Cancer provides culturally safe, trauma– and violence–informed care that recognizes and responds to the social, cultural, and structural factors that may affect the health and wellbeing of people living with cancer. This role uses a person-centred, strengths-based approach to support patients and families in navigating the health care system and accessing services and resources, and identifies and addresses barriers to care — including social, cultural, financial, and systemic factors — and connects patients and families with appropriate supports.

Working collaboratively with all members of the health care team and community stakeholders is an essential part of ensuring multidisciplinary care. Development of patient education resources, community outreach, and support in the development of strategies for the promotion of gynecologic health and cancer services are key elements of this position.

Qualifications:

Required:

Level of Formal Education & Experience

• Baccalaureate of Nursing from an accredited educational institution required; Master’s degree preferred
• Completion of an oncology-related program (Canadian Nurses Association or Oncology Nursing Distance Education Course, such as Foundations in Oncology Nursing – De Souza Institute) required, or willingness to complete within 12 months of taking the position
• Completion of, or demonstrated commitment to completing, Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism training
• Experience and knowledge of adult learning principles is preferred
• CNA Certified Oncology Nurse [CON(C)] preferred

Experience 

• Minimum four (4) years of recent oncology nursing experience
• Experience providing education to patients with gynecologic cancer is preferred
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or other equity-deserving populations is an asset
• Understanding of and experience working to address the impacts of colonization, systemic racism, and historical trauma on the health and wellbeing of impacted individuals and communities is preferred
• Experience with development of patient information and resource materials
• Experience and knowledge related to patient and public education, including development and evaluation of group education sessions

An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of culturally safe care principles and the ability to provide respectful and responsive care to individuals from diverse cultural and social backgrounds, including Indigenous Peoples with distinct histories, cultures and relationships to land and community
• Knowledge of trauma- and violence-informed care and the ability to apply these principles in patient interactions and care planning
• Demonstrated understanding of health equity, social determinants of health, and structural barriers—including systemic racism and the impacts of colonization—that may affect access to care and treatment
• Strong understanding of person-centred, strengths-based care and the importance of open and honest patient and health care provider communication and shared decision-making
• Knowledge of community outreach strategies and the ability to engage equity-deserving populations in cancer education and support services
• Knowledge of patient and public education, including development and evaluation of group education sessions
• Collaborative approach to multidisciplinary work
• Advanced verbal and written communication, facilitation, and presentation skills
• Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint) and videoconference technology (MS Teams), as well as ARIA electronic health record
• Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (2015) and Manitoba’s Path to Reconciliation Act (2016)
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism actions, inquests and reports, e.g., Jordan’s Principle, Joyce’s Principle and Brian Sinclair Inquest

Required Licenses, Registrations, Designations

• Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM)
• CNA Certified Oncology Nurse [CON(C)] or completion within 5 years is preferred

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• This position may require travel within Winnipeg and to other CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) or partner sites
• Must be able to work safely in a typical computerized office environment with frequent meetings at multiple locations throughout the organization, and to lift and carry items
• May be required to travel throughout the service area, requiring a valid Manitoba driver’s license and access to a personal motor vehicle
• Available to work occasional evenings and weekends

• Ability to speak French is considered an asset
