Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Coordinator, Orthotics/Certified Orthotist and concurrent with extensive self-teaching in preparation for the OPC exam, the incumbent assesses, measures, fabricates and fits orthoses.
NOTE: The degree of supervision received and the complexity of the tasks performed are in accordance with the incumbent’s demonstrated proficiency.
Experience
- Previous education and experience in the assessment, measuring and fitting of Orthoses as obtained in the OPC approved educational program required.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Complete high school education, Manitoba Standards, required.
- Completion of an Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) accredited clinical Orthotics school program or OPC approved equivalent training and approved by OPC for entrance into an Orthotics Residency.
- The ability and initiative to self-teach is essential.
- In addition to extensive self-teaching, on-the-job training will be provided by a Certified Orthotist to prepare the incumbent for the OPC certification examination in Orthotics.
- As a condition of employment, the incumbent must commit to write and pass this examination within four years from date of hire.
- In addition, the incumbent must attend relevant continuing education programs in orthotics on an ongoing basis as requested by the Coordinator of Orthotics.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Acceptance into an OPC Orthotics Residency and maintenance of good standing within the Residency. Must acquire the skills and knowledge to achieve successful OPC Certification in Orthotics within 4 years from date of hire.

- Demonstrated professional judgment and initiative.
- Demonstrated effective organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
- Ability to perform both independently and as a team member.
- Ability to organize and complete assignments with a minimum of supervision.
- Willingness to adapt to new concepts, techniques and best practice in the academic and clinical fields of health care knowledge.
- Computer literacy.
Physical Requirements
- Must demonstrate adequate strength, agility, motor coordination and dexterity for assessment, fabrication and fitting of orthoses.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, noise, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/visitors/staff.
- May be required to occasionally work extended hours.
- May be required to work a variety of shifts.
