Position Overview

Responsible for the operations of the Hospice kitchen and supply areas as well as all related activities, while maintaining high standards of safety and sanitation. Prepares and ensures accuracy of food items related to diet restrictions. Prepares food as per catering demands. Maintains adequate stock of food and supplies. 

Experience
  • Minimum 3 years recent experience in menu planning and budgeting of food and supply costs required
  • Minimum 3 years recent cooking experience in an institutional or commercial setting required, preference will be given to experience in a health care setting
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Grade 12 education
  • Successful completion of a formal training in institutional food preparation from a recognized program required (i.e., Culinary Arts Diploma, Culinary Skills Certificate or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge base and application of Therapeutic Diets and the Canada Food Guide required
  • Red Seal preferred

Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Valid Food Service Handlers Certificate required
Qualifications and Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, speak and write English
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude and desire to contribute positively to a home-like atmosphere in which care for persons at end of life is being provided
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an environment that values team function, accepting and following instruction, providing direction to others as appropriate, in order to contribute to the care of residents and their families
  • Receptivity to change and demonstrates positive, flexible and adaptive attitude
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and an ability to work with minimal direction
  • Demonstrated proficiency in arithmetic calculations and conversions
  • A sound working knowledge of safety and sanitation/ hygiene principles and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to cook appetizing meals
  • Knowledgeable of the WHMIS program
  • Ability to operate information technology equipment required, e.g. computer, software programs and applications etc.
Physical Requirements
  • Demonstrated physical and mental health
  • Ability to use knowledge of effective body mechanics, handle bulk items, and tolerate standing, walking, bending and lifting for extended periods during the day’s work

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
