Job Summary:

 

 

The Nuclear Electronics Technologist will perform Preventative and Corrective Maintenance on Radiation Therapy equipment (including Linear Accelerators, Orthovoltage Superficial X-ray units, Computed Tomography (CT) simulators, associated imaging and verification systems, and all related supporting equipment), Mammography Screening/Diagnostic X-ray systems, and various Biomedical and Ancillary equipment in CancerCare Manitoba Facilities in Winnipeg.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Nuclear Electronics Technologist, the Nuclear Electronics Technologist is responsible for the maintenance, repair, calibration, and support of equipment as listed above.  The incumbent ensures equipment is safe and reliable, and compliant with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations, applicable provincial legislation, manufacturer specifications, and institutional policies and procedures.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

 

 

Level of Formal Education & Experience

 

  • Graduate of a recognized Electronic Engineering Technology Diploma program from an accredited technological institute or university.
  • Successful completion of vendor service training courses relevant to the area of work (as required by CNSC to independently service linear accelerators) is preferred.

 

 

 

Skills and Abilities

 

 

  • High degree of aptitude and skill in mechanical and electronics systems to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair Linear Accelerators, Mammography X-Ray, CT Simulators, Orthovoltage, Biomedical and Ancillary Equipment.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the proper use of hand and power tools
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Adapt to stressful situations and make quick decisions and demonstrate a calm demeanor in the process.
  • Adapt to regular short notice changes to daily routines. 
  • Good organizational and time management skills, the ability to grasp concepts quickly, and a strong customer service focus.
  • Work under pressure and make decisions using sound judgement.
  • Must demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of basic physics of the atom, electricity and magnetism, electronics (including power supplies, amplifiers, timers, logic circuits, RB amplifiers, transmission, and antenna), CCTV camera systems, basic plumbing, pneumatics and hydraulics, and a range of electronic test equipment.

 

 

 

Required Licenses, Registrations, Designations

 

  • Active member in good standing of an associated regulatory body as appropriate.
  • Certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist by CTTAM (Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba Inc.) is required. If this certification is not currently held, it must be obtained within 6 months of starting the position

 

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

 

 

  • Must be able to work safely in a typical computerized office environment with frequent meetings and be able to lift and carry items.
  • The position may involve long periods of standing and the occasional lifting of heavy equipment, supplies, part, etc.
  • May be required to push or pull heavy equipment.
  • The position routinely involves working with small delicate instrumentation.
  • Incumbent’s work environment involves the use of solvents such as cleaning agents for solder flux remover, switch cleaners and other chemicals used in electronic/mechanical maintenance.
  • Required to travel throughout the service area requiring a valid Manitoba driver’s license and use of a personal motor vehicle.  May be required to transport tools and parts in personal motor vehicle.
  • Must have a valid passport or be able to obtain one within 6 months to attend training courses outside of Canada.

 

 

 

Special Training

 

 

  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete off-site basic and advanced training courses involving classroom instruction as well as on-the-job training in the operation and maintenance of the Linear Accelerators, Mammography X-Ray, CT Simulators, Orthovoltage, and Biomedical Equipment.
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete relevant service training courses and/or seminars on all equipment maintained at the CancerCare Manitoba Winnipeg and Brandon Facilities.
  • In addition, the incumbent will receive the following training: Basic Radiation Safety; WHMIS; Fire Safety; Transport of Dangerous Goods; and Radiation Safety

  • Must have satisfactory employment record
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada
  • Ability to speak French
