Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

 

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager Health Services, the Music Therapist is responsible for providing a music therapy program as a therapeutic tool for patients, to restore, maintain and improve mental, physical and emotional health; responding to psychosocial needs of the patients and their families; prioritizing patient caseloads; managing the daily organizational components of the Music Therapy Program; and supervising music therapy students and interns. The Music Therapist acts in a professional manner adhering to the principles of Family Centred Care.

Experience

  • Experience working as a Music Therapist in a healthcare setting preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Bachelor of Music Therapy required.

 

SPECIAL TRAINING:

  • Medical Terminology - Therapist is responsible for acquiring appropriate knowledge of terms, disease entities, medical/surgical procedures, tests and protocols specific to their programming.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must be registered with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists OR eligible for certification and become certified within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Must demonstrate understanding in the areas of: growth and development, play and family dynamics, and interventions to support coping.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, observation and assessment skills required.
  • Must have a basic understanding of the effects of hospitalization on patients and their families.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent or strong guitar and vocal skills required.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the position.
  • Physical demands include carrying necessary musical instruments and equipment.
  • Other physical demands may include crouching, stretching, kneeling, lifting and holding children, raising and lowering crib and bed rails, and pushing and pulling wheelchairs and beds.
  • Must be able to work with patients of all ages; children to adults.
     

Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
