HOURS OF WORK:                PART TIME (3 SHIFTS PER WEEK 9:30 am – 4:30 pm) .5 EFT

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Manager of Resident Experience the Simkin Centre’s Music Therapist is a compassionate individual who provides our residents with musical therapy programming including 1:1, small and large group sessions. Session opportunities offered by the Music Therapist will include singing, playing a wide range of instruments to offer opportunity for passive listening, and providing participatory programs that include playing, singing, and creating music.

 

EDUCATION

 

  •  Bachelor’s degree in music therapy is preferred

 

EXPERIENCE

 

  • 2+ years’ experience as a music therapist
  • Previous experience working in long term care or with clientele experiencing cognitive impairment is an asset

 

KNOWLEDGE

 

  • Knowledge of Jewish cultures and traditions is an asset
  • Have the ability to assess residents’ capabilities, limitations, and special needs
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills

 

SKILLS

 

  • Outstanding people skills
  • Proficient with playing a variety of instruments
  • Excellent singing abilities
  • Strong organizational, multitasking and problem solving skills
  • Familiarity with the therapeutic process
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Instructs residents on techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation

 

OTHER

 

  • Mental and physical ability to meet the demands of the position

 

RESPOSIBILITIES

 

  • Capability of multitasking effectively by playing music, interacting with residents, making assessments, and taking notes simultaneously.
  • Designing musical interventions based on therapeutic goals to improve the residents’ psychological, spiritual, physical, and social well-being.
  • Providing music therapy sessions.
  • Promoting Residents interaction by encouraging singing and movement to music.
  • Monitoring residents during musical interventions and measuring the effectiveness of the sessions.
  • Keeping records of each resident’s progress.
  • Maintaining musical instruments.
  • Overseeing and mentoring music therapy interns.
  • Participation within the musical structure of the facility to enhance community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
