Position Overview

Working as a member of the Shared Health Imaging Program' Medical Editor/Transcriptionist team under the leadership of the Manager - Radiology Support Services, the incumbent is responsible for creating accurate and timely diagnostic imaging reports by editing and/or correcting text documents received from Shared Health radiologists and residents using voice recognition software. Incumbents will also transcribe diagnostic imaging reports from dictation when required; e.g. during periods of voice recognition software downtime or when recognition of radiologists' or residents'voices is below the standard required for the software to convert voice to text.


The following experience is required:

  • Editing and correcting medical dictation in a Voice Recognition production environment without reference to hard copy source documents (i.e. health record).
  • Working knowledge of Voice Recognition Systems, Radiology Information System, PACS, printers and fax technology.
  • Aptitude for understanding dictation by individuals for whom English is a second language; e.g. dictation with strong accents, rapid speech, unusual phraseology.
  • Working with confidential personal health information and the ability to understand and apply key principles of privacy legislation as stated in regional policies.
  • Working in an automated Voice Recognition environment with a pool of transcription staff.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized medical transcriptionist training program required.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • The following special training is required and competency levels will be demonstrated through skill tests:
    • Typing/keyboarding skills of 70-80 words per minute.
    • Proficiency using Microsoft Word.
    • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, laboratory values, signs and symptoms.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent command of the English language (oral and written) including superior spelling, grammar and punctuation skills and their proper application when editing text created by voice recognition software.
  • Proficiency with email systems for departmental communications.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Periods of prolonged use of computer monitor, keyboard and ear phones.
  • Long periods of sitting.
