Wage: $16.00/Hr

Term - 8 Weeks

Program: Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ): – Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS)

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, administered under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). The program supports youth aged 15 to 30 in gaining paid summer work experience while developing skills for the job market.

 

Under the direction of the Manager of Maintenance and/or the Maintenance Worker II, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the care of the grounds, plantings and landscaping of the facility, to perform planned maintenance tasks and to assist in daily outdoor maintenance routines within the Facility.

  • Works within the framework of the Golden Links Lodge’s Mission, Vision and Values, and in accordance with its policies and procedures.
  • Respects Residents Rights at all times.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

 

To be eligible for employment under the Canada Summer Jobs program, candidates must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada, including possession of a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of employment
  • Ability to obtain a clear criminal record check and Adult Abuse Registry Check. (For all applicants over 18 years of age)

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

1) Education: Currently Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution, or a recent graduate.  Preference will be given to those enrolled in programs relating to the position.

 

2) Experience:  

  • Basic level of knowledge in drywall, painting and carpentry
  • A good knowledge of WHMIS and adheres to safety principles.
  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s Licence desirable.

 

2) Other

  • Ability to read, write, comprehend and speak fluent English is required.
  • Good physical dexterity and condition with no vertigo or balance problems.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from same. Should not be afraid of heights.
  • Ability to learn and take direction.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Clean, neat appearance, in accordance with GLL dress code.
  • All hires under the age of 18 require a Criminal Record and Adult Abuse Registry check.
  • Be available for regular scheduling of hours and occasional scheduling on evenings.

 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  1. Required to maintain grounds, landscaping and plantings to a high level of care so that the exterior of the Facility has a pleasing, neat and well cared for appearance.  Duties include, but are not limited to: grass cutting, weeding, edging, trimming & pruning, watering, plant installation and care, use of insecticides and fertilizers, and other related care routines.
  2. Required to keep areas such as the small garage, the large storage building, the paint storage room and to assist in keeping the crawlspaces, in a clean and organized manner.
  3. Required to remove garbage from the garbage room on a daily basis according to established procedures.
  4. Required to check the property and grounds on a daily basis for litter and garbage and remove same to the garbage bin.
  5. Required to use and maintain departmental tools and equipment in a manner consistent with good tradesman-like practice. Grounds equipment is to be keep in a clean and well maintained condition. Tools and equipment are to be kept as secure as possible at all times to prevent loss.
  6. May be required to assist with setting up rooms for Resident activities.
  7. May be required to pressure wash exterior grounds.
  8. Wash exterior and interior windows as assigned.
  9. Presents a courteous, cooperative and professional manner and attitude to both Residents and Staff while performing required duties.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED   

  1. Decisions necessary to carry out duties and responsibilities within given direction.
  2. Receives direction verbally and/or through written Work Request Forms, Work Orders, Preventative Maintenance Tasks, Established Routines, Policies, and Procedures.

 

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT        

The Maintenance Assistant will operate the following:

Lawn mower, hand tools, paint mixer, paint brushes/ rollers, power tools, hand dolly, moving cart, grounds equipment, and other equipment as required to perform duties.

 

OTHER

  • Provides regular communication Manager of Maintenance and co-workers as it relates to daily departmental activities, projects and long-term goals of the Department.
  • Demonstrates respect for Residents, their family members/ visitors and belongings required at all times.
  • Works as part of the Golden Links Lodge interdisciplinary team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
