Position Overview

Directly accountable to the General Shop Supervisor, the Industrial (Millwright) Mechanic maintains a Machine Shop function for the repairs, servicing, modification and manufacturing of mechanical equipment, hydraulic equipment, furniture, kitchen equipment, i.e., food mixers, produce grinders and choppers and all rolling stock comprising of beds, bed trays, stretchers, etc.

 

Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies their Manager or their designates (i.e. supervisors) of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

Experience

  • Must have welding experience.
  • Must have machine/lathe experience.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Journeyman, industrial mechanic (millwright).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrates knowledge and support of:
    • The vision, values, goals, and objectives of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Deer Lodge Centre.
    • The Deer Lodge Centre’s Mission Statement, Residents Bill of Rights and Code of Conduct.
    • Personal Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
    • Knowledge of the procedures used to operate equipment related to Millwright trade (lathe, end mill, etc).
    • Knowledge of metals and plastics, sizes, composition tolerances and capabilities.
    • Knowledge of welding techniques such as brazing, acetylene and arc welding.
    • Knowledge of metal fabricating techniques.
    • Knowledge of bearing replacement and associated mechanical parts.
    • Knowledge of safety practices.
  • Ability to perform precision work on a metal cutting lathe.
  • Ability to understand forms and relationships when working from blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to make visual comparisons and note differences in shapes as necessary when fitting machinery parts.
  • Ability to make proper, clean fusing of materials.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate and present alternatives for evaluation.
  • Ability to produce quality work.
  • Ability to work in an environment respecting the privacy and rights of patients/residents that may be encountered in carrying out duties.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing all job requirements.
  • Skill in precision work.
  • Skill in the use of machinist tools.
  • Skill in millwright activities.

Physical Requirements

  • May be required to work extended hours.
  • May involve exposure to disease, radiation, toxic materials, noise, allergens, etc.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated patients/residents/staff/visitors.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
