Position Overview
Under the direction of the supervisor/manager and in conjunction with WRHA Indigenous Health, the Indigenous Support Navigator is responsible for:
Acting as a culturally safe resource for Indigenous patients and their families entering Winnipeg Regional Health facilities for health care (including emergency care). The incumbent will receive enquiries from patients and direct them to appropriate internal and/or external programs or resources. They will deliver excellent customer service and provide resource information for enquiries as received.
The Indigenous Support Navigator will keep up to date on new and existing community-based programs/supports for Indigenous people and make recommendations for relevant services and programs. They will also liaise with external agencies (health/social/governmental) to find out more about programs/supports provided and the requirements to qualify for services.
The incumbent is responsible for tracking the number of Indigenous patients/clients assisted, entering information into a reporting database, and closing the record when the patient leaves the care of the WRHA.
This is a Designated Indigenous position. This position may be held by someone of Indigenous ancestry who is First Nation, Metis, Inuit and/or Non-Status. Candidates will be required to undergo screening as required.
Experience
- Related experience in a health care setting is preferred.
- Healthcare system navigation experience is preferred.
- Customer service or social services experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of federal, provincial, municipal and Indigenous resources accessible in community is an asset.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Post-secondary education in a related field is required.
- A suitable combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
Class 5 Driver’s License preferred (varies by facility/assignment).
Qualifications and Skills
- General knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, health issues impacting Indigenous communities, the social determinants of health, and the impact of intergenerational trauma, is required.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work in partnership with healthcare professionals, all levels of staff, patients and families, required.
- Knowledge of computer systems and proficiency in the use of current and related software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet search engines and email).
- Ability to independently prioritize workload and stay organized is required.
- Demonstrated good judgement and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality is required.
Physical Requirements
- Class 5 Driver’s License preferred (varies by facility/assignment).
- Access to a vehicle preferred (varies by facility/assignment).
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
