Job Summary:

THIS IS A DESIGNATED INDIGENOUS COMPETITION THAT IS OPEN TO INDIGENOUS APPLICANTS. Proof of ancestry will be requested, and those selected for an interview will be asked related questions. We invite applicants to self-identify in their cover letter and/or resume.

CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) provides health services in facilities located on the treaty territories and ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anishininewuk, Dakota Oyate, Denesuline, Nehethowuk, Ininiwak, Nêhiyawak Nations and on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.

We acknowledge northern Manitoba includes lands that were and are the ancestral lands of the Inuit. We acknowledge harms and dedicate ourselves to building relationships and collaborating with First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.  Through this commitment, and rooted in Truth and Reconciliation, we will improve health experiences and outcomes for Indigenous people.

CCMB recognizes the importance of building an exemplary health care labour force that is inclusive and reflective of the population it serves. We are committed to equity in our hiring and employment practices, including increasing the representation of Indigenous Peoples at all levels of our workforce. We encourage First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals to apply.

CCMB upholds legislation and guidance calls and provincial commitments in the following foundational documents:

The Indigenous Nurse Navigator is a health care professional who enhances patient outcomes and experience by facilitating culturally grounded, safe, trauma- and violence-informed care. The role improves access to cancer care services and resources for First Nations, Inuit and Métis patients. This position supports patients throughout the cancer continuum, including clinical suspicion, treatment, survivorship and end of life or transition to the Spirit World.  The Indigenous Nurse Navigator has knowledge of the diverse contexts, cultures, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, the impacts of colonization and racism, and the gaps and barriers to accessing care. The role recognizes and addresses social, structural, and systemic barriers that may impact access to cancer care.

This position provides person-centered guidance and support and promotes self-management and empowerment for Indigenous patients and families throughout the cancer experience at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB). The Indigenous Nurse Navigator works within the scope of practice, standard operating procedures, directives and guidelines to support patients and collaborates within a provincial community of practice of Nurse Navigators. Through case management and comprehensive assessment, the Indigenous Nurse Navigator assesses, recognizes and addresses a wide range of physical, psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs.

The incumbent supports patients throughout their journey by creating care plans that address their needs and the needs of those included in their circle of support. This includes facilitating access and connections to services such as surgery, primary care, medical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology, and supportive care programs. This role collaborates with internal CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) teams, external partners, Indigenous communities and organizations, and social service agencies to help patients navigate complex health systems.

This role supports equitable access to cancer care for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis patients and families by identifying and addressing barriers to care and facilitating connections to appropriate services and supports across health systems.

The Indigenous Nurse Navigator develops and sustains relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners to support continuity of care and culturally responsive service delivery. This role also contributes to internal decolonizing efforts at CCMB, supporting practices and processes that advance health equity, cultural safety, and the implementation of the Calls to Action from Truth and Reconciliation, Joyce’s Principle, and the Brian Sinclair Inquest.
