Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety, and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission, Values and Management Philosophy of St. Boniface Hospital, the Health And Safety Assistant is responsible for: working in collaboration with the Safety Coordinator by participating in activities that support health and safety programs and accident reduction, including activities related to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) such as maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS) inventories, labelling, education and waste management; participating with the development, implementation and maintenance of safety programs, policies and procedures; maintaining training records; participating in the occupational hygiene program; working with others to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the patients, visitors and employees of St. Boniface Hospital (SBH) and the Research Enterprises; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Experience

  • Two (2) years related experience in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Successful completion of a diploma program in occupational health and safety from a recognized institution.

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience, as deemed recognized by the Hospital, may be considered in lieu of the above.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of computer systems and proficiency in the use of various common software applications which may include, but is not limited to, spreadsheet, word processing, database, internet and email applications.
  • Training in WHMIS, and other safety programs.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
