Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager, independently functions as the bed management lead within the service. Key responsibilities include day to day bed management and waiting list coordination, analysis and reporting of data from the CIHI datasets and the Centre's patient information databases. In conjunction with the manager of HIS/C, the bed management lead coordinates the system for forms that house patient/resident information. The incumbent has working knowledge of the release of patient information and health record management functions of the service to provide relief and assistance and to support the needs of customers.

Experience

  • One-year current experience coding and abstracting health records using the most current software and classification systems.
  • One-year current experience working with waiting list management systems.
  • Experience using Crystal Reports software for data extraction.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduation from an accredited Health Information Technologist/Health Information Management Professional program.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Health information Management Professional with active membership in the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) data sets relevant to RHC's patient and resident population, i.e., Discharge Abstract Dataset (DAD), National Rehabilitation Reporting System (NRS), Continuing Care Reporting System (CCRS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CIHI methodologies and reports required.
  • Knowledge of the Long-Term Care Access Centre and coordinated entry referral systems.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in coding and abstracting.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Suite of products including Excel, and Word at an advanced level.
  • Knowledge of relevant Workplace Safety and Health responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper lifting and heavy handling techniques.
  • Ability to apply CIHI standards and classification systems.
  • Ability to express ideas and thoughts in English both verbally and in written format.
  • Ability to select appropriate communication methods pertinent to the situation.
  • Ability to listen and comprehend effectively.
  • Ability to organize workload, set priorities and work with a high level of independence.
  • Ability to problem-solve and negotiate.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work safely without injury to self, to patients/residents, or to other staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with all levels of staff and coworkers, outside agencies and the general public.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to balance and stand on a stepladder.
  • Physical strength to handle office materials.
  • Must have 20/20 vision (corrected or uncorrected) and the ability to distinguish colours.
  • Must have hand eye coordination and dexterity for keyboarding.
  • Must be able to pass a standardized hearing test if required.

 

 

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
