Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Manager Health Services, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the incumbent acts as a resource person to other healthcare professionals and to the community. to coordinate and provide clinical management to patients that have been affected by sexual violence or maltreatment which may include sexual and physical abuse. This care includes complete medical forensic exams, administration of prescribed medical treatments, a leadership role within the healthcare team and facilitating coordination of patient care, discharge and patient follow up. Nursing care is provided utilizing the nursing process for a complete medical forensic exam.
The Nurse Clinician utilizes advanced skills and knowledge and performs at a high level of independence as a clinical practitioner, leader, consultant and educator. Practices are in accordance with employer policy and professional standards. The Nurse Clinician supports families in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Nunavut and Saskatchewan as required.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years recent pediatric clinical experience in relevant nursing specialty required (Emergency, ICU, Ambulatory Care, Primary Care, Forensic Nursing).
- Current forensic nursing experience preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing education program required.
- Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred.
SPECIAL TRAINING:
- Successful completion of a relevant post-basic program may be required in a designated area.
- Successful completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Pediatric course within 6-12 months.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
- Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with Employer policy.
Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge of:
- College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.
- Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
- Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
- Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
- Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
- Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
- Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
- Principles of delegation.
- Mandatory legislated reporting.
- Management of forensic evidence including chain of custody.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Maintains scope of practice with Program approved medical forensic practices and procedures.
- Maintains medical forensic competency by working a set number of shifts on a regular basis as specified by the Forensic Nursing Examiner Program.
- Proficient with computers, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

- Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.

- Advanced clinical knowledge in subspecialty such as child maltreatment.
- Commitment to maintaining current knowledge in area of expertise through reviewing literature and attending continuing education inservices, workshops and conferences.
- Expertise and competence in nursing practice, interviewing, counselling, teaching and group dynamics.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with referring physicians and nurses and community members.
- Displays initiative, accountability, good time management, decision-making ability, leadership and strong organizational skills.
Physical Requirements
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
- May be required to work flexible hours.
- May be required to travel to sites within Winnipeg to complete medical forensic exams.
