Position Overview
Under the direction of the Manager/Charge Cardiac Sonographer or Designate, the General Duty Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for obtaining high quality cardiac ultrasound images and related structures for the echocardiography physician who will interpret the examination. The incumbent may also assist in the education of new staff, students, patients and visitors; assisting in research endeavors within the department. The incumbent will maintain a safe environment in accordance with professional and provincial guidelines and ensure compliance with quality assurance programs and maintain standards put forth by Accreditation. Functions are conducted in accordance with the Mission and Values of Shared Health, current policies and procedures and applicable legislation.
Experience
- One (1) year recent experience as a diagnostic cardiac sonographer preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Complete High School education, Manitoba standards, required.
- Successful completion of a CMA accredited Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Certified with Sonography Canada as a Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) and/or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
- Must maintain registry status by obtaining the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.
- Must maintain current BCLS (Level C) in accordance with the applicable policy.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the applicable policy.
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated computer skills is an asset.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
- Windows computer environment required.
- Apply technical knowledge to interpretation of results, troubleshooting and assessing of methods.
- Skilled in the use of highly technical cardiovascular ultrasound equipment and probes in order to produce complete anatomic and functional information for the Cardiologist to interpret.
- Previous experience using healthcare information systems is preferred (e.g. Radiology Information System (RIS) and Admission, Discharge, Transfer System (ADT), EPR, eChart).
- Experience with analysis software for cardiovascular imaging (e.g. ISCV and Viewpoint).
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member.
- Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships in a multi-disciplinary team environment and with external agencies, groups, and the public required.
- Proficient analytical skills.
- Work under pressure.
- Maintains confidentiality with all information entrusted to the position, adheres to Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the position including being able to stand or walk for extended periods of time without resting.
- Must demonstrate the use of safe and effective body mechanics while working with clients.
- May be required to occasionally work extended hours.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, noise, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/visitors/staff.
