Job Summary:

 

The Epidemiologist 2 provides a high degree of technical specialization in epidemiology, health systems services research, biostatistics, data analysis, and/or public health that provides highly technical and specialized advice, and plans, organizes, oversees or performs complex study design and analysis. This position may provide a similar level of technical expertise, but spends the majority of time leading large projects and overseeing staff that perform technically moderate to complex tasks.

 

The Epidemiologist 2 will secure operational and research project funding by contributing to study protocol development, relationship building, and strategic planning. This role will also lead/co-lead/collaborate on projects related to Manitoba cancer data, provide methodological and analytical expertise, analyze data as required, communicate results to a variety of stakeholders, and oversee study team members to ensure accuracy in methodology and reporting. The Epidemiologist 2 may be given ad hoc responsibilities as requested by their supervisor which can include short-term back-up for specific positions and others as deemed appropriate by their supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

Education

  • PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, or other health-statistics related field, or MSc in epidemiology, biostatistics or other health-statistics related field from an accredited educational institution.

 

Experience

  • 5 years experience managing research and surveillance projects, or quality improvement initiatives.
  • 5 years experience using statistical analysis software such as SAS, Stata, or R.
  • 5 years experience in consultation, negotiation, and collaborator/stakeholder engagement.
  • 5 years experience in designing research studies, selecting appropriate research methodology, and conducting statistical analysis.
  • 5 years experience working with large administrative and clinical databases.
  • 5 years experience teaching and mentoring.
  • 5 years experience conducting research.
  • 5 years experience managing small or moderately sized teams.

 

An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with advanced statistical programming in programs such as R, SAS, and/or STATA.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work in several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to problem solve and think critically.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to teach or mentor both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Strong knowledge in the application of all types of study design.
  • Capable of self-directed and team-based learning.
  • Strong team building and cooperation skills.
  • Familiarity with clinical and administrative data and its application to cancer-related research, surveillance and/or quality improvement projects.
  • Familiarity with the research approval process.
  • Strong grantsmanship skills.

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work safely in a typical computerized office environment with frequent meetings at multiple sites throughout the organization, and able to lift and carry items.

  • Must have satisfactory employment record.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.
  • Ability to speak French is considered an asset.
