Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager - Patient Care - Diabetes Education Centre, the incumbent is responsible for: Teaching all aspects of diabetes self management to inpatients, outpatients and their families. Providing in-service education to staff and students. Developing, assessing and revising educational materials.

Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in Diabetes Education is required.
  • Previous experience in adult teaching preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing, required.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, preferred.
  • Certified Diabetes Educator required (candidates eligible and willing to write the exam at the next available opportunity will be considered). (Note: Continuing employment in the position is conditional upon passing the exam).
  • Certificate in Adult Education preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must be registered or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Current BCLS certification required.
  • Member of Diabetes Education Section of the Canadian Diabetes Association preferred.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Commitment to self development through continuing education programs and self-directed learning.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.

Physical Requirements

  • Good physical and mental health as well as manual dexterity.
  • While working in the clinic, moderate to considerable walking is required.
