Position Overview

Under direction of the manager, the incumbent works as part of the integrated Downtown/Point Douglas Community Mental Health Team. The main function of the Community Health Worker is to provide episodic assistance/services to the clients attached to the Downtown/Point Douglas Community Mental Health Program. The incumbent will assist with immediate client care needs as determined by the Downtown/Point Douglas community mental health workers. The intent of the position is to enhance capacity within the Downtown/Point Douglas Community Mental Health team to be more responsive to client care needs in the Downtown/Point Douglas community area.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years (within the last five years) experience in a community-based setting.
  • Extensive personal and/or professional experience working with inner city populations, including those with mental health/addiction issues, the mentally challenged, elderly, immigrants and refugees.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • High School diploma, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a related outreach training program preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Requires a valid driver’s license and vehicle.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Understanding of community development, individual capacity building, and knowledge of community resources is essential.
  • Understanding of the determinants of health and adult education is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural history and population impacts.
  • Basic knowledge of mental health recovery philosophy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
  • Ability to initiate and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork, collaboration and partnerships.
  • Demonstrates a professional approach in all situations.
  • Proficiency in computer software.

 

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.

 

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
