Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient- centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
The Indigenous Volunteer Administrator role is in Volunteer Services at Health Sciences Centre (HSC). Volunteers are a vital part of HSC’s culture, supporting patients, families, and staff. Volunteer Services is a department dedicated to recruiting, screening, training, and placing volunteers throughout HSC. This position will work in partnership with clinical programs and departments to create volunteer opportunities including enhancing Indigenous patient and family culturally safe and trauma informed care.
The position involves frequent collaboration and communication with staff at all levels of the organization, from frontline administrative teams to leadership to ensure volunteer support aligns with Indigenous patient and family needs. This role will help design and coordinate patient centric volunteer initiatives, such as ambassador programs and patient cultural programs that will directly influence how patients and families experience the hospital.
The Indigenous Volunteer Administrator ensures volunteers are thoughtfully recruited and placed in hospitality and service roles, such as, ambassadors, cultural support, newspaper delivery, book carts, and flower delivery. These volunteer supports provide comfort, connection, and positive interactions for patients and families, helping to reduce the stress of a hospital stay while creating a more welcoming and culturally respectful environment. At a time of increasing demands on healthcare staff, this role is essential in strengthening volunteer supports that allow clinical teams to focus on priority patient needs.

Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience in recruitment, interviewing, screening, problem solving, supervising, orientation and training, program planning and building effective relationships with volunteers and organizations.
- Experience as a volunteer is an asset.
Knowledge of Manitoba’s public health care system and services. - Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous healthcare priorities, services, and challenges alongside Indigenous culture, protocols, traditions, and values, both within communities and organizations in Manitoba.
- Experience in customer service and conflict resolution; proficient in written and verbal communication and collaboration; skilled in developing and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Post-secondary education plus recognized training in Volunteer Management preferred.
- Education and training in Indigenous relations, patient safety, trauma informed care, quality management, mediation or conflict resolution are assets.
- Completion of Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism training.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Volunteer Management Professional of Canada or in process in attaining membership is an asset but not required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge of Indigenous languages is an asset.
Strong and culturally relevant communication, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and leadership skills. - Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is required.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (2015) and Manitoba’s Path to Reconciliation Act (2016).
- Demonstrated knowledge of ethical principles and cultural protocols in interactions with Indigenous partners and organizations.
- Knowledge or familiarity with Indigenous health issues, population health, and health status of citizens in Manitoba.
- Thorough knowledge of Windows based programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Internet.
- Demonstrate ability to relate effectively to variety of people from diverse backgrounds
Physical Requirements
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
- May be required to lift 25 lbs. on occasion.
- Primary environment within office setting; with travel to communities and hospital locations as required.
- Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate service requirements through scheduled overtime and on-call work as required.
