Housing Support Worker - Steinbach

Position Summary:

 

Under the supervision of the Housing and Supports Manager, the Housing Support Worker plans, organizes, and facilitates the activities of the Positive Living Program in collaboration with participants in the community. In addition to the Positive Living Program, the Housing Support Worker assists in providing individual outreach support to tenants in the Eden East apartment buildings. This would include skill building, crisis intervention, linking to community resources, and maintaining formal and informal support networks. The Housing Support Worker will use Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Principles in carrying out their regular duties.

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

    • University or college education in Human Services or other relative education/experience required

Experience:

    • Experience in Mental Health preferred
    • Previous experience in group facilitation an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

    • Knowledge of Manitoba Residential Tenancy Act and Guidelines an asset
    • Knowledge of mental illnesses/mental health issues and recovery required
    • Ability to work effectively in Microsoft Office (outlook, TEAMS, word, excel)
    • Excellent time management, organizational and decision-making skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
    • Experience in facilitating group learning and leisure activities
    • Excellent Conflict Resolution skills
    • An understanding of the Steinbach community, available resources and ability to develop appropriate connections

    • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (with the Vulnerable Sector Check)

    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Current Vehicle Registration, indicating 3rd Party Liability Insurance of $1,000,000 or more

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Positive Living Program:

    • Implements recovery focused programming that is holistic and considers the physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual needs and interests of the participants.
    • Assists participants to acquire living skills through our Positive Living Program including personal hygiene and grooming tasks; household activities (cleaning, laundry, meal planning, money-management skills), social activities. Group programming to be developed.
    • Assists participants/tenants to understand their tenancy responsibilities.
    • Demonstrates flexibility, creativity and initiative in implementing a recovery-oriented program.
    • Uses a person-centered approach which includes language and behaviour that demonstrates respect for individuality and dignity.
    • Provides information to the Housing Social Worker and/or Housing and Supports Manager during the initial and ongoing work with the tenant including mental health issues/obstacles, activities of daily living, recovery and rehabilitation, and potential services and/or supports required.
    • Cultivates a broad range of personal interest and maintains awareness of social and recreational events in community.

Housing Procurement

    • Collaborates with Southern Health housing team to assist community in housing procurement
    • (choose and obtain housing appropriate to client’s circumstance, specifically procuring independent housing or residential care (approved homes) housing). This will include developing collaborative relationships with community mental health, housing support, proctors, home operators and landlords.

Housing Support

    • Reviews/develops participant support plans in collaboration with Housing Social Worker and/or Housing Supports Manager.
    • Assists participant to carry out support plans, create structure, and work towards their goals which will support their recovery.
    • Encourages participants/tenants to practice appropriate coping strategies.
    • Encourages natural (non-professional) networks and supports.
    • Clarifies, defines, and sets appropriate boundaries with tenants/participants and encourages boundary setting in all relationships.
    • Provides assistance under the supervision and direction of the Housing and Supports Manager regarding advocacy, referral, coordination and linking participants/tenants to resources.
    • Acts as liaison between tenant and landlord (works closely with Tenant Relations Coordinator).

 

Secondary Duties:

 

    • Participates in Eden East/ERCS staff meetings as required.
    • Participates in the Selection Committee meetings for Eden East apartments.
    • Complete monthly statistical reports.
    • Keeps appropriate documentation.
