Position Overview
Interventional Psychiatry (IP) includes a variety of modalities for difficult to treat mental disorders but commonly include electroconvulsive therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and intravenous ketamine. The Interventional Psychiatry Hub will be responsible for the lead and coordination of systematic provincial expansion of interventional psychiatry interventions using a hub and spoke model.
The Provincial Interventional Psychiatry (IP) Hub will oversee the direction and coordination of IP services to ensure high quality patient care including staff training and education and implementing a central Hub for intake of patients, allowing timely access to treatment for all Manitobans.
The Provincial IP Hub is responsible for ensuring accountability and advancement of identified deliverables across IP spoke sites in the province and ensure satellite sites are connected to the spoke to ensure regional accessibility to these procedures.
Main Function:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Health Services, and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Shared Health, the Interventional Psychiatry Casual Nurse working under the general direction of the Interventional Psychiatry Leads, is responsible for providing services for patients of the Interventional Psychiatry Hub receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) treatments; intake, assessment, monitoring, coordinating, administering, recovery, and evaluation of (ECT) treatments.
The IP Hub Nurse will support provincial expansion of IP to spoke and satellite sites and the development of a centralized intake process for the province. The IP Hub Nurse will participate in development of provincial protocols as well as staff training and education. The IP Nurse may also support short and long-term therapy by attending to relevant physiological, psychological, and sociological needs of the patient and provide consultation to the multidisciplinary health care team.
Experience
- Minimum three years related psychiatric nursing experience working with people with serious and persistent psychiatric disabilities; combination of acute care and community experience will be considered.
- Two (2) years’ experience in Critical Care Setting required (PACU, ICU, ER, UC or equivalent).
- Crisis intervention skills desired.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing program is required.
- Post Anesthesia Care.
- Successful completion of an accredited Critical Care/ICU Nursing Program (ex. CCNOP) or equivalent or PACU Course required.
- Bachelor of Nursing/ Psychiatric Nursing Degree preferred.
Special Training/Skills:
- Critical Care, Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
- TMS certification preferred.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM).
- Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
- CPR at the Targeted Responder Level required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge of:
- Relevant legislated acts including but not limited to Personal Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions).
- Regional/site/unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines relating to clinical care.
- Working with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Working knowledge of treatment, rehabilitation and support in mental health.
- Skills in assessing, planning, development and coordination of support services.
- Working knowledge of and preferred experience in working with people experiencing addictions.
- Knowledge of ECT, rTMS and ketamine pharmacology.
- Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
- Demonstrated clinical competence in delivery of psychiatric nursing services to patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders.
- Knowledge of community agencies/programs desired.
- Required to be self-motivated to ensure clinical practice skills and knowledge remain current.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, to assist in working effectively with the interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to deal with stressful and challenging situations.
- Subject to a criminal record check.
Physical Requirements
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
- Rotating facility location will be required (Selkirk and Winnipeg).
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle required.
