Occupational Safety and Health Officer

Position Overview

The Occupational Safety and Health Officer is subject matter expert for health and safety consultation and responsible for the overall coordination of workplace activities associated with Southern Health-Santé Sud’s Workplace Safety and Health program, including integrating safe work procedures, developing and delivering training, hazard identification, and leading safety and health initiatives. The incumbent also supports Workplace Safety and Health committees, investigations/inspections, liaises with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values; and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Experience

• Experience with the development, implementation, and maintenance of a Workplace Safety and Health program, including job hazard analysis, accident investigation, workplace assessments, WHMIS, and education program.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

• Post-Secondary Education in the area of Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources, Business Administration.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

• Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similar designation an asset.
• Possess or successful achievement of professional safety designation (CRSP, CRST or acceptable related designation) within two years of hiring.
• Requires a valid Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.

Qualifications and Skills

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of Workplace Safety and Health Act & Regulations obligations.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of other relevant provincial and national statutes and regulations, including but not limited to: relevant CSA and ANSI Standards, Workers Compensation Act, Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Personal Care Home Standards.
• Ability to take initiative, multi-task, function independently, and prioritize tasks.
• Well-developed case management skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Demonstrated analytical and investigative skills.
• Demonstrated creative problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in computer systems and related software applications.
• Ability to conduct public presentations and instruct on topics related to the position.
• Strong aptitude for communicating challenging concepts within all levels of the organization.
• Ability to maintain positive working relationships and function effectively in a team setting.
• Demonstrated ability to critically analyze, research and ensure evidence-based practice is followed to develop procedures, protocols and guidelines.
• Given the cultural diversity of our region, the ability to respect, work with and promote a culturally diverse population is required.
• Proficiency of both official languages is essential for target and designated bilingual positions.
• Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums.
• Good work and attendance record.

Physical Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
• Meets hearing and vision standards.
• Some exposure to hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
• May have to enter and navigate through active construction sites, confined spaces, and heights.
• Moderate lifting may be required.
• May work occasionally evenings, weekends and/or extended hours as necessary.
• Will be required to regularly travel to other regional facilities as the position duties may require.
