Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the close supervision of the Supervisor, and Technologists, and concurrent with extensive self teaching in preparation for the CSOT exam the incumbent rotates through either the Ward/Emergency or the Cast Room and performs mainly routine and some more complex duties including: Ward/Emergency - fitting, assembling and adjusting standard or improvised orthopedic equipment and traction appliances (i.e. casts, splints, traction, etc.) in accordance with surgeons’ written/verbal instructions. or Cast Room – Ambulatory Care/Adults/Pediatrics – applying, adjusting, removing or changing casts and/or braces as well as caring for surgical and non-surgical wounds in accordance with the surgeons’ written/verbal instructions. NOTE: The degree of independence and level of complexity will increase proportionately to the incumbent’s increased demonstrated proficiency.

Experience

  • Experience with adult and pediatric orthopedic conditions is required.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards, required.
  • Post-secondary education preferred.
  • Successful completion of a recognized course in Anatomy and Physiology is required.
  • The incumbent must write and pass the examination offered by the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists within a two year period from the date of hire.
  • The ability and initiative to self teach is essential.
  • In addition to extensive self teaching, on-the-job training will be provided by the Orthopedic Technology Supervisor as well as the Technologists to prepare the incumbent for the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists registry exam.
  • In addition the incumbent must attend relevant continuing education programs as requested by the Orthopedic Technology Supervisor.
  • Family and Friends CPR training is recommended.
  • WHMIS training is provided.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must receive full registration with the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists within two years from the date of hire.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Sensitivity to children (all ages) and families is required.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

  • The employee must be able to meet the physical demands of the job which includes considerable walking, lifting, bending and manual carrying.
  • Contact with staff, patients and public.
  • Frequent exposure to dust, grease, oil, noise, infectious disease and interruptions.
