Position Overview

This position is required to develop and carry out the information systems management plans and policies for medical device systems (hardware and software) within the WRHA. The Medical Device Systems Specialist is a qualified IT network and system specialist dedicated to medical device systems, technology and integration.

 

Reporting to the Regional Manager – Integrated Systems, Clinical Engineering the Medical Device Systems Specialist is responsible for managing medical IT networks both connected to the Digital Health enterprise network and isolated Clinical Engineering networks. This includes maintaining network information, architecture, and medical device systems databases. The incumbent will have access to server rooms and network closets and be able to verify and assign addressing for devices and systems connected to the enterprise network, manage firewalls between medical device systems and the enterprise network.

 

The Medical Device Systems Specialist:

  • Acts as primary technical resource for designing and maintaining networked medical device systems throughout the region.
  • Manages cybersecurity policies, processes, and strategies for networked and non-networked medical devices in the region.
  • Assists with the CE Program’s responsibilities for technology assessment, planning, and budgeting.
  • Develops and delivers networking and system management education to Clinical Engineering and clinical staff.
  • Assists in the planning, development, management and maintenance of CE Program policies, programs and systems.
  • Work with Digital Health Network/Access staff as well as ICT Technical Specialists in creating and maintaining the networked medical system.

Experience

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • University degree in any relevant engineering discipline such as Biomedical/Clinical Engineering or university degree in Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Cybersecurity specific training would be an asset. Vendor and industry certifications in specific technologies and functions (such as CISSP, MCSE, CCNP and ITIL) are assets.
  • ITIL version 3 Foundation or Practitioner Certification would be an asset. The response should include a copy of the certification.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Active member of an associated regulatory body as appropriate.
  • Membership in one of the following organizations is required upon incumbency: the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS); the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES); the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI); the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of ITIL processes and the IEC80001 risk management framework would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with health information staff, information systems staff, health professionals.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation and instructional skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and prioritize demands to meet deadlines and achieve defined customer service levels.

 

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.

 

Please note that an employee is not permitted to hold two or more positions across the WRHA legal entity that combine to equal more than 1.0 EFT. The WRHA legal entity includes Churchill Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, Grace Hospital, Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, Pan Am Clinic, River Park Gardens, Victoria General Hospital, WRHA corporate programs, and WRHA community health services.
