Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager, Health Information Services, and working in a self-directed team environment, the Health Information Analyst is responsible for providing health data and analysis of that data for use in healthcare delivery and financial management planning.

Experience

  • At least three (3) years' recent experience using ICD-10-CA and CCI (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Canada and Canadian Classification of Interventions) to code in accordance with CIHI Canadian Coding Standards.
  • Experience within the past two (2) years completing abstracts in accordance with the CIHI Discharge Abstract Database Manual rules and guidelines.
  • Experience within the past two (2) years working at an advanced level with electronic medical record (ie Accuro).

  • Previous working experience developing and generating statistical reports required.
  • Previous experience conducting retrospective and concurrent audits of patient health information preferred.
  • Experience using other electronic data retrieval tools, such as Crystal Reports, Micro strategy, and Cognos Report Studio preferred.
  • Preference given to those with knowledge and experience using the Manitoba Abstract Data Elements (MADE).

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards, required.
  • Successful completion of a Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) recognized Health Information Management Program required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Successful challenge of the CHIMA National Certification examination, with a valid CHIMA certificate, current active CHIMA membership preferred.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to assign diagnosis typing in accordance with the CIHI Coding Standards.
  • Ability analyze information in patient records in order to select appropriate codes, abstract data elements, and assign patient services.
  • Ability to use Folio Views to assign diagnosis and intervention codes.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and to prioritize demands in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to recognize when key data, required to select appropriate codes and abstract elements, is missing from the patient record.
  • Detail-oriented with an appreciation for data quality.
  • Ability to use appropriate reference materials.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team effort.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required to facilitate interaction with physicians, managers, and other health care professionals.
  • Excellent problem solving skills required to analyze requests in order to choose the most effective and efficient means of providing data.
  • Ability to take initiative and coordinate projects from beginning through to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer technologies to capture, manage and analyze data and to report and present data in a meaningful manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Access, and the ability to launch programs, navigate within and between Windows, open hyperlinks, save documents, edit documents, edit records, and accurately perform data entry.
  • The ability to locate websites on the internet and search within the sites for specific information required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) methodologies and reports required.
  • Assumes responsibility for ongoing education and participates in professional activities for personal and professional growth.

Physical Requirements
