Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centred clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the direction and tutelage of Manager, Coding and Analysis, the incumbent is responsible for coding inpatient and daycare health records using the International Classification of Diseases.  Extracts data from the health record and appropriately enters that data into the on-line abstracting system in accordance with current coding and abstracting standards.  Makes adjustments to abstracts based on updated chart documentation, edit failure reports and quality data reviews. Responsible for achieving pre-defined productivity levels as a means to meet strict schedules for data submission. 

Experience

  • Basic knowledge of Manitoba coding and abstracting rules and principles is required.  
  • Knowledge of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) standards and methodology required. 
  • Knowledge of computer operations required.  
  • Familiarity with resource materials required to accurately code and abstract, for example, the CIHI Abstract Manual and pharmaceutical reference materials.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards, required.  
  • Completion of at least the first year of an accredited Health Information Management program required.  

Qualifications and Skills

  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Windows applications and the Internet required.

Physical Requirements

  • Extended periods using a computer, including viewing on-line information and using a mouse.  
  • Very frequent deadline pressures.  
  • Requires careful attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
